چکیده

In this paper we propose the use of two resolution-based rules for the Max-SAT encoding of the Maximum Clique Problem. These rules simplify the problem instance in such a way that a lower bound of the optimum becomes explicit. Then, we present a pre-processing procedure that applies such rules. Empirical results show evidence that the lower bound obtained with the preprocessing outperforms previous approaches. Finally, we show that a branch-andbound Max-SAT solver fed with the simplified problem can be boosted several orders of magnitude.

On uniform sampling of cliques

The problem that we are addressing in this thesis is the problem of sampling uniformly the cliques of a target size k of any given graph. As a natural approach for solving this problem, we used the already available state-ofthe-art heuristic MAX-CLIQUE solvers. The heuristic MAX-CLIQUE algorithms, which we used for this task, have k-CLIQUE solvers as their subroutines. This thesis therefore exa...

An approximation hardness result for bipartite Clique

Assuming 3-SAT formulas are hard to refute on average, Feige showed some approximation hardness results for several problems like min bisection, dense k-subgraph, max bipartite clique and the 2-catalog segmentation problem. We show a similar result for max bipartite clique, but under the assumption, 4-SAT formulas are hard to refute on average. As falsity of the 4-SAT assumption implies falsity...

New Inference Rules for Max-SAT

Exact Max-SAT solvers, compared with SAT solvers, apply little inference at each node of the proof tree. Commonly used SAT inference rules like unit propagation produce a simplified formula that preserves satisfiability but, unfortunately, solving the Max-SAT problem for the simplified formula is not equivalent to solving it for the original formula. In this paper, we define a number of origina...

Exploiting Inference Rules to Compute Lower Bounds for MAX-SAT Solving

In this paper we present a general logical framework for (weighted)MAX-SAT problem, and study properties of inference rules for branch and bound MAX-SAT solver. Several rules, which are not equivalent but Λ-equivalent, are proposed, and we show that Λ-equivalent rules are also sound. As an example, we show how to exploit inference rules to achieve a new lower bound function for a MAX2-SAT solve...

Min-Max Problems on Factor Graphs

We study the min-max problem in factor graphs, which seeks the assignment that minimizes the maximum value over all factors. We reduce this problem to both min-sum and sum-product inference, and focus on the later. In this approach the min-max inference problem is reduced to a sequence of Constraint Satisfaction Problems (CSP), which allows us to solve the problem by sampling from a uniform dis...
